This painting was created in honor of the great evolutionary biologist, Lynn Margulis, whose died in November 2011 and whose books had a major impact on my way of understanding the world. It is an imaginary depiction of her theory of endosymbiosis, the process by which one organism moves into and becomes part of another to form a new more complex organism. Here, single-cellspirochetes are swimming vigorously through a viscous medium, attaching to other single-celled organisms to become the "tail" or flagellum that provides the host organism with movement, according to Margulis. In the lower portion are two modern protozoans that swim and obtain food by moving their whip-like cirri and cilia. The blue undulating form, also covered with cilia, represents the endless movement of life.
"My painting takes off from nature inspired by science, especially from cell biology and botany. While much art depicts the world at the human scale (landscapes, portraits, apples in a bowl) I often start with cell membranes, the inside of cells, the silk spigots of spiders, lichens — the world of the tiny. By depicting natural forms in an imagined, mythical world, my paintings reveal the human psyche and its capacity to go beneath the surface of things; to experience beauty and awe and even fear; to understand that we humans are connected to all the other creatures on earth and even to the cosmos. I enjoy observing and reading about nature, but I am not a scientific illustrator in the conventional sense. I do study my subject matter...

I adore this painting and what it represents. What was the original size. I am wanting to get one of the canvas prints here, but size is a big question.

Dear Couture- Thank you for your comment. The original is not for sale, but you can order beautiful reproductions, printed on fine paper or on canvas in different sizes. I, myself, have one at actual size in my home.
